I’m often asked, "Mary, what's your morning routine? What's your evening routine?" These questions come from my friends, coaching clients and audience members during live events. I determined years ago that establishing a bedtime routine helps me fall asleep more easily, as well as supports me in feeling grateful, happier and more fulfilled throughout the day. And, it's easier than you might think! Incorporating these five practices into my evening has made a huge difference in every area of my life. By sharing them, my hope is that maybe they will for you, too. 1) I ask myself, “Who do I want to be today?” 2) I practice gratitude. 3) I review my day. 4) I use the “pruning shears of revision.” 5) I remind myself that there's a power in me that's greater than anything that comes my way.

Put Your Oxygen Mask On First!

Many of us run around at top speed trying to do it all a great deal of the time. There are quite a few expectations and quite a few triggers around every corner, it seems.
Our bodies, though, likely don’t know that little crises will soon pass. Our bodies just keep taking the hit. For me it is the neck area. I know I am feeling extra stress when my shoulders seem to be touching my ear lobes. Sometimes getting a full breath is a chore. And my eyes are tired from lack of good sleep. But like a lot of folks, I have always kept up the pace. Kept pushing along to get it all done.

Not a great way to show up in the world, is it?
Over the last few years, I have been focused on Self-Care. Specifically, I’ve been focused on Self-Care for caregivers, but most of us find ourselves in need of Self-Care at some point. We need it, because without it, it is nearly impossible to receive and give joy. How can an empty vessel pour out more? How can a car on “empty” make it to work, school, a family gathering (although not making it might feel like the best of Self-Care – but that’s another blog!)

Indeed, like the flight attendants tell us, we must “put on our own Oxygen Mask first.”
There are plenty of websites that can give you ideas about Self-Care. What is most important is recognizing that we are worthy and deserving of self-care, we can put ourselves first, there is time in everyday to do at least one thing to care for ourselves, and it is the best gift we can give our families.

If you have children or young ones you are close to, know that they learn best by watching you. As parents, teachers and caring adults, we spend a lot of time telling kids what to do. But in my years as a parent and as a school psychologist, I can assure you, children learn by example. In my work in schools I met a lot of parents. Even if they looked nothing like their child, I could pick them out with great certainty. Mannerisms and ways of speaking, give great clues, but it is also the mindset and habits that reveal the influence of adults on children.

So what are the young ones in your life learning about Self-Care? We fear that we might take time away from those who need us, but our children need our example. Think about times you may have heard a child say something bad about themselves like, “I’m so stupid!” It hurts to hear it! But do they hear that in how we talk about or to ourselves? If we see a child hitting themself because they are upset, we want to stop it. But do they witness us harming ourselves in some way?
Now is the time to consider giving the best gift ever to your family and friends. Show them how much you care for them by caring for yourself. And, you can also teach them about self-care, as well. Get creative – make a coupon, host a Self-Care party, arrange an activity, start a new tradition. Your family and friends will benefit as much as you do.
Essential & Quick Self-Care practices:

1. Exercise – get outside if possible. Vitamin D from the sun is critical for our systems. If you can’t get outside and you don’t have a home gym – Dance! Find a free video on your phone or laptop.
There are plenty of quick exercise or dance videos to get your blood moving and heart racing.

2. Hydrate – drink plenty of clean water daily. Limit or eliminate caffeine. Limit or eliminate alcohol. Limit or eliminate sugary drinks. Can’t say enough about drinking good water everyday. Simple – but lots of us forget to do it.

3. Sleep – This cannot be overstated as an essential of Self-Care. Quiet, dark and cool rooms are best.

4. HUGS! – Hug your family and friends (with their permission) just for the health of it. Your body produces hormones when in contact with others. Acts of compassion and caring also produce healthy hormones. With kids – healthy hugs (again – with permission) are vital to growth.
5. Massage – if you can’t afford a great massage, this is another way to provide loving touch to a loved one, and receive one in return. Neck, shoulders, feet and hands are all great spots for a quick massage.

6. Sugar Scrubs & Moisturizing–
you can buy a good body scrub or make your own. Add essential oils to enhance the experience. Scrub hands, feet, and elbows. After a scrub or bath or shower, be sure to moisturize. Our skins are our body’s largest organ! Caring for your skin can improve well-being in a variety of ways.

7. Gratitude – make a practice of gratitude. This is a wonderful practice for families. What we focus on, persists. Why not focus on what is right in the world, what works, what brings us joy?
8. Journaling - Journaling is a great way to get thoughts out of our heads. If you have trouble sleeping, try writing out your worries and anxieties before you go to bed.

9. Unplug – I love technology. I do NOT believe it is the enemy, but I know it can become an addiction, as well. Every time we play a video game, play a game on our phone or scroll through social media, we are seeking a dopamine hit to our brains. Limit your intake. Set a timer.
10. Brain food – Eat well, certainly, but also consider what you feed your brain in what you consume with your ears and eyes. As a news junkie, I have to limit how much I consume everyday and take frequent breaks. When I actively put good stuff in my head – music, audiobooks, reading, art – my stress levels go way down

Self Care Self-Assessment:
Take a deep breath, consider how you are feeling inside. Rate yourself on a scale of 0 -1 0 on how well you practice self care in general, with 0 being “not at all” to 10 being “I practice self-care daily”.

For most of us, we probably care for ourselves in fits and spurts – sometimes well, and at other times, not so much. If you could make one shift in your life to put yourself first and care for yourself on a consistent basis, what would that action be?

Often, the best way to make a change is to start small, but focus on consistency. Small changes, done consistently, over time, tend to yield lasting results.
So, ready to make a commitment? What small change can you take on this next week to better care for yourself?

“This week I will

What is Gratitude?

"Gratitude is not only in what you do
but how you approach what you do."

There are some whose lives are filled with great blessings but still feel that they have nothing. And there are those who are truly poor, yet given even the slightest crumb will feel they are most fortunate. One may be as wealthy as a prince or princess and still feel impoverished or as poor as the poorest beggar and feel wealthy.

The feeling in the mind is not dictated by the external circumstances or environment but by the mental approach taken by the individual. When you want to be happy, to make the best of your life, it is best to take the approach of the person who feels that whatever they have, be it great or be it ever so humble is the blessing of God. It is better to feel that you are fortunate than to feel you are deprived. Either feeling might be there, be you rich or be you poor, be you overflowing with opportunities or be you lacking in direction.

The practice of gratitude can take many forms. You may begin with simple exercises such as beginning and ending each day by remembering or even writing down all the things you are grateful for. They can be large or small, from a new job you are excited about to a flower you saw blooming by the side of the road, a beautiful sunset or a person who smiled at you warmly in a store. Part of the practice of gratitude is simply beginning to notice all the good things that go on around you each and every day. Sometimes we get conditioned only to notice what is wrong with the world and our lives and we overlook what is right.

Gratitude is turning that process around. Another helpful practice is to remember all the kind deeds done toward you by others. Think of someone you know and appreciate and express your gratitude. Write him a letter or email or even better tell him in person how much you appreciate him. Notice what others do well and express your appreciation. And don’t forget your animal friends grace of the Divine that is opening another direction that will lead you where you really need to go. For the Divine looks at your heart and seeing your heart will help you go where you must go to become all that you can be. So do not be unhappy with your life; do not be sad with your existence for your future is bright and the Divine looks after you with great love and affection.

If you take the view that whatever is given to you in life is a blessing, you will find that your life is filled with blessings throughout. You will find that you have much potential within that will evolve forward as time goes on. Never be disheartened; never allow yourself to be discouraged; know that you are guided. The same force that guides the stars guides you also. That which is in the depths of your heart is what you really need to find your way home to the ocean of love. The Source will come to you and guide you, for grace surrounds you. So live in gratitude. Live in reverence for life and transform your life in joyous appreciation.

How Gratitude Can Be Your Partner in Life

By: Sonia Devine
Are you constantly struggling with life? If so, you might be focusing on all the wrong things. Practising daily gratitude will help you to turn your life around. Want what you have and what you want will come to you!

Gratitude is one of the most important things you can practise if you want to manifest unlimited wealth. One of the best ways to keep abundance and wealth flowing into your life is to give thanks for what you have today. By focusing on what you already have, you allow yourself to receive even more, so it is really vital to practise true gratitude.

We live in a world that focuses on instant gratification. If we don't have the money for something that we want to buy right now, then all we have to do is go to the bank and they are more than happy to loan us the money. As a result, many people are inundated in debt, and they become trapped in a never ending cycle of wanting, buying, and then spiralling deeper in debt.

When we get stuck in this cycle, we are constantly wanting things that we don't have, and in the process, we forget to appreciate what we DO have; Every day, we remind ourselves of what we are missing in our lives, and we can't begin to grasp the concept of gratitude. Instead, we say:

"When I have everything I want...THEN I'll be grateful!"

But that is not the way the Universe works....

Are you always comparing what you have with what others have, or wishing you could have what is advertised on TV? Or perhaps the people who live next door have a better car, a nicer house and more "things to play with" than you. Of course, it doesn't help when pictures of the "perfect family" with the "perfect life" are right on that TV screen in front of you every day. Do you feel deprived, frustrated or angry because you don't have what seems to be on offer to everybody else?

Whatever your situation is, focusing on what is lacking in your life is the single most effective way to ensure that you remain in a
state of scarcity.

You might ask this question: But How Can I Show Gratitude When I Don't Have What I Want Yet?. And that IS a good question; so here's a good answer: Make A Habit Of It.

Now, if you have become accustomed to only seeing scarcity all around you, then my guess is that gratitude will be the last thing on your mind. So the suggestion I am going to make may be difficult for you at first; I would even go as far as to say that you may feel a bit resentful about having to do it.
Some people don't want to take responsibility for the fact that they are not doing well financially. It's so much easier for us to blame other people and outside circumstances for our lack of wealth; because if it's all other people's fault,

then we don't have to do anything ourselves in order for "things to change".. right??

Well Okay, that's fine if you're happy for things to remain exactly as they are now. But if not, why not give this a go? You have everything to gain and nothing to lose! So make a commitment to change the way you see your life. Take stock of everything you have. You might be surprised and even amazed at all of the little things that you forgot are so special to you.

Begin by writing of all the positive things you have in your life. Who loves you? Who are your friends? What about your children. How do they light up your life? These are just a few things that we forget about that add so much value and joy to our lives.

Practising gratitude each day will remind you of the good things in your life. Now, I don't want to sound like a Pollyanna, but this is worth a try! If nothing else, it will help you feel better about your current life circumstances. Add something new to your gratitude list each day, and you'll be amazed at how many great things you will be able to think of once you develop this skill!

When you are grateful for everything you already have, you open yourself up to attract more great things. The Law Of Attraction always makes sure that this will happen. Thank the Universal Source for everything you currently have, and you will invite and allow even more prosperity to come to you. Make gratitude a part of your daily routine....and witness miracles in your life!
