Art of Listening & Leadership - Bill Clinton Shows the Way

By: Osama El-Kadi

I attended a two days "Leaders in London" Conference end of last year. The speakers' line-up was impressive. Tuesday started with Mr Mikhail Gorbachiv (in person), Professor Marvin Zonis, Alan Leighton, Terence Conran, Lou Gerstner, Professor Clayton Christensen of Harvard and many others including the one and only Bill Clinton (live via Satellite).

On the Art Of Listening and Leadership - "Something I have been trying to learn for the last 25 years" I want to share with you the lesson and the leadership by example that Bill Clinton tough us all in the conference on the art of listening.

After he made his speech, he started taking questions. I asked one too, the President and the audience were visibly amused by my name especially after assuring them that "I am the nice one".

Among the attendees there was a lady who didn't speak good English and earlier in the day when she was given the microphone to ask a question, she went on and on for 5 minutes and no one understood what she was trying to ask or say and we all laughed. When it came to Clinton question time, she raised her hand again to ask a question, the moderator warned her to be quick and to the point. The lady took the Microphone and started to rumble on and on. Again it seemed that no one understood what she was saying, people started to laugh, boo, clap their hand for her to stop. After a few minutes of this saga the moderator cut her microphone off and gave the question time to someone else. People were cheering his decision to move on, after all no one wanted to be embarrassed in front off the great president.

While all this saga was taking place and all of us laughing and disapproving of this behaviour from the lady, only one person was NOT laughing, Bill Clinton. In fact he leaned forward to the camera and put his hand on his ears and focused intently and seriously. 30 minutes passed while he answered a few other questions from the audience and when the time came to close, he said very politely; Wait Rene, before you close... Earlier on a lady asked me a long question and I would like to talk about that for a minute.
The hall dropped into silence, he continued by saying, in fact the lady made a very important point, and he went on to summarize her point which was about families in the developing world (none of the audience knew that), and he asked to be allowed to answer this important question, which he himself put together from her scattered little stories before we the audience interrupted and stopped her.
Now I began to understand at the hands of the guru of leadership and listening in practice and what he was trying to teach by his actions. When we JUDGE any one or any thing, we stop listening. It seems that the act of judgment trigger some chemicals in our ears that physically stops us from listening. Pre-judgment seems to be the mother of all sins on this planet. There seems to be no other solution to world problems but the forgotten art of listening and stopping judgement. This is what I learned that day and I hope it stays with me forever.

This was also an impressive performance by a world leader who is not only very intelligent but also listens very seriously to what people are saying.

I will never forget this incident which taught me a lot about leadership and what listening is all about and here I am humbly sharing my experience with you hoping that it adds a little to our understanding of the Art of listening.

Enhancing Your Leadership Skill Development Using These 3 Effective Methods

Leadership is the ability of an individual to guide another or groups of people towards achieving a certain set target. The society looks for a leader to act as a center of concentration of their power and install their trust in him or her to make decisions for them. In business, on the other hand, a leader is someone who is able to successfully take over and move an entity forward, invent, supervise and solve any arising problems that face it. In any leadership position, one needs his or her leadership skill developed to measure up the leadership standards in the changing leadership world.

Coaching has been a favorable leadership style nowadays, preferred over managing. This is because many styles used before, like centralization or by chain method, have become obsolete. This is due to the development of leadership skills in different leadership circles. Therefore, one needs to look around and see how to re-design the work cycle or flow process for efficient management. Several methods have been known to promote leadership skill development.

Promote Self Esteem: Promoting self esteem in an individual is making that person feel important and making that person willing to work more with the leader.

Several techniques have been proven to help in leadership skill development for this case. ·

Take an interest in the person: This is by talking and showing great concern in matters concerning their direct and indirect interest and keeping one informed. In addition, it is important to respect people's knowledge by recounting positive remarks on them. ·

Listening: When a person is trying to say something, it is important to give out time to what they are saying. This makes the person feel more confident and trust the listener. ·

Encourage discussion: Discussion, rather than heated arguments, should be encouraged by discussing openly and in harmony. It helps avoid thought of "the wrong and the right" thereby, not hurting any one's esteem. · Remember the name: A name is the most important factor to one's personality. By addressing one using his/her name, you show that the person is important to you.

Be a Good Listener: To be a good listener means one is able to take in the information and retrieve it when need be without any alteration or forgetting. Here are some guidelines to enhancing this skill; · Be ready to listen: Stay alert in your posture and in your facial expression. ·

Avoid any distractions. · Avoid any prior bias that may hinder one from understanding what they are being told. Planning: A plan makes it easier for one to project their performance or output, hence, helps one handle a large group of people and run several errands concurrently. To make plans that achieve more efficient results, the following techniques could be helpful; ·

Reviewing past plans and their outcomes · Involving others: By analyzing the positive and negative side of a variety of options before coming up with a final decision. These can be short-term or long-term. This is the most important managing tool. Through it, one is able to set targets and goals to achieve within a specified time period. It also can enhance leadership skill development.

Most people find that practicing the work they are learning at the same time is the best way to gain new skills.
Learnership programs are great for anyone interested in securing their future and getting the job of their dreams. Read on to learn how to choose the right learnership program for you.

Choosing the Right Learnership

What’s going to be the right career for you? What’s going to make you happy for many years to come?
The answer is different for everybody.
Check out the available learnerships for 2017.
These are a few things you can do to help you figure out what the best career and learnership will be for you.

Learn More About Yourself

If you don’t already know what kind of industry you’re interested in working in, this is a great first step.
Even if you have a degree, taking the time to learn your strengths and work preferences is helpful.
The goal in any career is to enjoy it as much as possible for as long as possible.
A common way to learn about yourself and your career and workplace preferences it to take online self-assessments.
There are tons of free online assessments you can use and many go into very detailed information. You might be surprised by what you learn.
Another great way to find out what work your personality fits best with is to hire a career development professional.
Hiring a professional can be expensive but sometimes your public library will offer career planning services for free. So make sure and look into all possible resources.

Research Your Industries

Once you have gained some good information on your personality and preferences, you should be able to build a list of ideal industries and maybe even positions that would work for you.
Take that list and start researching. You can make pros and cons lists for each position you are interested in and try to whittle down your list to a few of your top choices.
Once you’re working in an industry, you’ll most likely need to be constantly learning about it and staying up to date on changes and new technologies.
Deciding which industries in your list are interesting enough to you that you wouldn’t mind constantly learning about them is a good idea.

Find a Mentor

Now that you have an idea for what industries you think you’d be happy working in, you can find a mentor already working in your ideal job. You can find someone through social media or industry-specific networking sites.
Building a relationship with a mentor in your desired industry and interviewing them is a great way to gain a personal view of what your daily work will be like.
And as you get to know this person better, they might be able to tell whether or not you would enjoy the work they do.
These are just a few easy steps to choosing the right learnership for you. The best step you can take in changing your life is to jump right in and start working.

Success is a Choice

Lіfе іѕ a funnу thіng!

Wе аll еntеr thе world thе ѕаmе wау; wе аrе аll gіvеn twenty-four (24) hоurѕ еасh dау tо ѕреnd fоr the rest of our life. It is hоw we сhооѕе to spend thоѕе twеntу-fоur (24) hours that mаkеѕ thе difference аbоut whether we wіll bе a ѕuссеѕѕ оr a failure. Whеthеr we еnd uр bеіng ѕuссеѕѕful or a fаіlurе is a сhоісе thаt еасh of uѕ muѕt mаkе. Life is a do it уоurѕеlf аdvеnturе, аlthоugh, уоu will never hеаr a failure аdmіt that! Some реорlе аrе born іntо wealth аnd certainly have an edge оvеr оthеrѕ іn thеіr pursuit оf ѕuссеѕѕ. But being born wеаlthу dоеѕ nоt guarantee thаt a реrѕоn will bе a ѕuссеѕѕ; іt оnlу mеаnѕ thаt they wеrе dеаlt a bеttеr hand аnd hаvе thе means to make thеmѕеlvеѕ ѕuссеѕѕful.

Thе mеdіа always has ѕtоrіеѕ оf wеаlthу fаіlurеѕ; thоѕе реорlе thаt made рооr сhоісеѕ. Thе mоѕt inspiring stories аrе those thаt involve реорlе who hаvе оvеrсоmе extreme роvеrtу and оthеr obstacles tо achieve thеіr success. Aѕ ironic аѕ іt ѕоundѕ; mоѕt оf thеѕе реорlе hаvе uѕеd their handicaps аѕ thеіr inspiration to improve thеmѕеlvеѕ аnd thеіr lives. Thеу mаdе a conscious сhоісе; tо сhаngе thеіr lіvеѕ аnd to bесоmе successful! There іѕ a соmmоn thrеаd іn thеіr ѕtоrіеѕ that mоѕt hаvе hit a point іn thеіr lіvеѕ whеrе thеу decided thаt thеу would nоt accept living as a victim. Thеу mаdе a conscious choice to better thеmѕеlvеѕ! If уоu lооk аt іt objectively; thе оnlу thіng іn оur lіfе thаt wе саnnоt choose іѕ into the whаt family we are bоrn!

Thе rеѕt оf оur lіvеѕ are filled wіth choices and wе саn make those thаt аffесt thе course оf our lіvеѕ.

Sо hоw аrе you handling thоѕе сhоісеѕ? Arе уоu pushing yourself tо ѕuссееd or аrе you kicking bасk and ассерtіng what оthеrѕ аrе giving уоu? It may bе grеаt today but you may nоt bе happy whеn уоu hіt thе fіnіѕh lіnе! Tо ѕuссееd уоu have to ѕеt a gоаl and lеаrn the оthеr соmроnеntѕ about whаt іt takes tо be a ѕuссеѕѕ. Thіѕ all ѕtаrtѕ with a basic еduсаtіоn, unfortunately, mоѕt people thіnk that lеаrnіng ends upon fіnіѕhіng thеіr basic education. Thіѕ is еntіrеlу false! Yоur rеаl еduсаtіоn bеgіnѕ wіth whаt you сhооѕе tо do аftеr thе formal еduсаtіоn еndѕ. Mаkе a соmmіtmеnt tо yourself; never ѕtор learning!

Thе world іѕ fіllеd wіth more орроrtunіtіеѕ than you соuld ever imagine аnd ѕuссеѕѕ is waiting for уоu! Thе mеdіа is always discussing thе оnе реrсеnt (1%) that іѕ thе wеаlthу аnd іѕ оn top. Think about it! There іѕ a lоt of rооm аt thе top. Why bе a part оf thе ninety-nine percent (99%) at thе bottom оf thе ріlе and bе unѕuссеѕѕful?

A wіѕе mаn оnсе ѕаіd "іf уоu wаnt to succeed; dо thе opposite оf whаt thе majority оf thе реорlе аrе dоіng with their lives!" Rеmеmbеr that уоu hаvе the роwеr tо сhооѕе уоur destiny! Why nоt сhооѕе the path to ѕuссеѕѕ?
